It is ridiculously easy for malefactors to get your account and routing numbers - again, they are printed on checks, no one in banking thinks they are private pieces of information.I'm careful who I write a check to.Writing a check gives out your checking account number... it isn't a big state secret.
But overall, in the internet era where everything is connected, I don't like to make it too easy for malefactors to do bad things. Giving both a checking account and routing number online to a CD retailer to put in their online database and have subject to leaks, hacks, breaches doesn't make sense to me. It's not like they're a financial instituion with the protections that come with that status.
Being cautious with information is sensible - but only to a certain degree. Not investing in a CD if they can only be direct funded because you don't want to give out your bank account number isn't caution, its silliness.
