If you don’t want too many tourists Oxford is very full of them in summer !
A car would be good if you want to visit less tourist places.(driving outside London is a little less scary than in London- but make sure you specify an automatic)
Herefordshire/somerset/oxfordshire/gloucestershire are a nice area to visit - Blenheim palace is great and Wells is also very nice ( I agree giving Stonehenge a miss - Avebury is a less touristy alternative). Stratford upon Avon is touristy but it has the Royal Shakespeare company there and easier to get tickets for a play than their London location (avoid matinee performances- full of school kids studying the play)
(If you’re really up for adventure you could visit the Morgan car factory and hire one of their cars!- it’s in the Malvern hills)
Weather is always the big variable
