Revocable trusts make sense in some cases and in some states but not in most cases in most states. The original poster didn't provide any information that would indicate that a revocable trust would make sense in his/her case.

You are probably correct that $9,000 would probably include a revocable trust. Or perhaps the lawyer got the sense that he/she was shopping around and estimated $9,000 to discourage him, or because the lawyer thought he/she would be a difficult client. Or perhaps he/she wanted a fixed fee and the lawyer thought it would probably be about $6,000 on a time basis so he/she quoted $9,000 because of the risks of a fixed fee.

$5,000 (or a bit more in a higher cost city) is certainly reasonable without revocable trusts.
Good points. Would be interesting to get more info from the OP.
