I think many people over-do it on oil changes. With modern synthetics, 1 yr/10,000 miles is perfectly adequate, absent extraordinary circumstances - dusty dirt roads, towing, racing etc.

However, maintenance of other vital fluids is often overlooked. You don't need to go crazy on these either, but, for instance BMW considers the coolant and power steering fluid to be "lifetime fills." I change at 10 years/100,000 miles.

In addition, do periodic
-brake fluid
-transmission fluid
-differential fluid

If your car has a timing belt, be sure to change that out at the recommended interval to prevent a catastrophic engine failure.

Find a good trusted independent mechanic to give your car a thorough annual inspection.
