Be very careful about selecting who to do the foreign exchange with at ATMs and credit cards. It often seems you should select dollars on the prompt, but almost 100% of the time you should do the transaction in Euros and let your bank or credit card do the exchange rate.

Most carriers have an international option. AT&T was $6/day. I found it worth paying vs trying to do cards or something.
