I happened to look up the latest Harbor Freight sale and remembered this thread.

Although Harbor Freight has a well-earned reputation for selling low quality tools, they have stepped up the quality of many (not all) of their products significantly in recent years (I think Sears going out of business might be a factor). And their Pittsburgh wrenches and sockets were always at least decent.
They have adopted the "good < better < best" product positioning strategy of many tool companies, with Pittsburgh < Quinn < Icon as the entrants in their socket lineup.
And 3/8 is generally the size I'd suggest to start with for somebody who just needs the set most likely to fit common tasks.
