Personal Finance (Not Investing) • I got my tax refund today--and it doesn't match what I filed!

Never in a billion years would I expect that from the IRS. I suppose anything is possible, though! Still, while I have had a number of interactions with IRS employees that were surprisingly positive and useful but I'd never have characterized them as generous.

The OP corrected the error in good faith, submitted the correct form (thanks to talzara’s suggestion), and likely behaved in a civil manner. We often underestimate the power of doing things the right way.
