Cloud in general is very reliable and secure if you are reasonable with passwords and such. I'd say it's far superior to storing anything locally as there's always a chance your computer will get destroyed one way or another. It's just extremely unlikely these days that your files will get lost stored on one of the major provider's systems.
With cloud, you can also download a copy to store locally as a backup. Google sheets will export to both excel and open office formats (.xlsx and .odt)

For the last decade, for personal stuff, I mostly just use google sheets for the convenience. I do use open office for sensitive docs and spreadsheets that I don't want to keep in the cloud.

The few times I need to work on an excel file with someone else, I used the free microsoft 365 online. These days, for anything not super-fancy, google sheets is the path of least resistance
What is the free microsoft 365 office?

Go to OneDrive (onedrive.live.com) and you can create/upload/edit word docs, excel spreadsheets, powerpoint, and onenote, using your free microsoft account.

Alternately, go to office.com
Thanks. Why don't people just use this instead of paying for Office 365?
