I knew WCI was a high risk adventure seeker, from feedback he gave me when I posted a few years back about rafting the Grand Canyon, a much lower risk, but not no risk, trip compared to this climb. Being faced with our own mortality in such a stark way, I imagine, changes our outlook on life (somewhat). For those of us not climbing the Grand Tetons, we assume this risk every time we are in a car traveling at highway speeds, we just don't really think about it all that much. ...

Grand Canyon rafting, researched extensively what the risks are with a commercial outfitter, and decided it is reasonably low, cold water being high as a potential problem. My trip ended up in a historic high water release, first day scared the heck out of me since I could see even the guides were on edge. Was an awesome trip I have good memories even with severe sickness in my group.

WCI is a lucky guy.
I'm not sure that climbing the Grand Teton is riskier statistically than rafting the Grand Canyon. There was a fatality a couple hours ahead of us on the river when a J-Rig flipped in high winds and killed a client. When we floated past their group the next morning it felt like attending a wake. One of the saddest things I've ever seen outdoors. The fatality was a 60 something year old lady who had brought numerous family members on the trip with her as a special treat.

Both locations and activities are pretty incredible places that I count among the highlights of my life. And yes, I am a lucky guy for many reasons.

Be safe out there. Sometimes risk shows up, both in life and in investing.
While boating down the Grand Canyon in a dory boat, we dropped off a few people and picked up a family at Whitmore Wash who flew in by helicopter. That very night, one of those people who joined our group had a heart attack. The following morning, we had to oar him 30 miles down to Diamond Creek where he faced a long bumpy ride up and out of the canyon in the back of a pickup. I never heard if he had made it. Sometimes we risk our lives just by being where others are not and can't easily get too.
