I do use sector funds. The last thing I would do is use them to overweight what is already the largest sector by market cap. Of course I don't like doing it looking in retrospect at past performance, but I'm not contemplating any changes.I'm 59 and have had a two fund portfolio for a few years. ( I gave up on international funds 5+ years ago)
It has been 80/20 allocation up until the end of 2023:
80% VTSAX - Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares
20% VBTLX - Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Admiral Share
In January 0f 2024 I added VIATX - Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Admiral Shares. So now I am at:
72% - VTSAX - Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares
8% - VITAX - Vanguard Information Technology Index Fund Admiral Shares
20% - VBTLX - Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Admiral Share
I realize this introduced risk and there is overlap in the the two stock funds. I like the tech sector as it has out performed the total market for several year and I wanted more exposure there.
My question is what are people thoughts on on a sector fund outside of your core and what if you like it or do it, what % to you allocate to the sector fund?
