I tried this on Windows Turbotax 2024 and it works. I created a return for a student with $9K earned income, $8K taxable scholarship. I said student can be and is claimed as dependent, and student provided more than half his own support with earned income. Obviously, providing half support means he is not dependent; nevertheless, Turbotax prepared the return as desired, checking box "can be claimed" and not imposing Kiddie Tax.TurboTax does not seem to accurately capture the nuance of the different support tests for dependency and kiddie tax. On the child's return, you should try telling the software he did support himself:

Sometimes you need to fib a bit on Turbotax interview to get it to do things right.
