It's not allowed. There are some possible opportunities to get money out of the plan that depend on plan provisions:
1) after-tax subaccounts can sometimes be distributed.
2) Roth conversions of after-tax subaccounts can sometimes be distributed.
3) 401k loans can allow you to invest money that is in the plan on a pre-tax basis outside the plan.
To get the full amount, you need to resign. I've done #1 and #3 myself.
