I think the OP is asking about printers which will refuse to print even in monochrome if they think the color cartridges are empty, and they will decide the color cartridges are empty even if you never print with colored ink. We had an HP that did that - you could put in new color cartridges and in a couple of months it refused to print a B&W document, with a full black cartridge, saying the color cartridges were empty, even though we had printed zero color stuff since replacing the cartridges.

My solution was to stop a couple of decade long habit of buying HP printers. We got an Epson ET-2760. It is an 'EcoTank' model, meaning you rill the ink reservoirs from a bottle, so you aren't locked into proprietary cartridges, and the ink comes in bottles. After a few years, we're still on our first $14 bottle of ink:

instead of constantly dropping $50 or whatever to replace still full HP cartridges.
