Roth 401k of that is an option for getting the match.

The only exception is if he cannot afford to do the full match
due to having to pay the 12% taxes on that contribution. Then just
do tax deferred and get the full match.
Don't pass up free money.

The match will be tax deferred anyway, so he will have
some of each
