Both my children were NMF and got free tuition/room at certain schools. Son insisted on LSU--he insists his college experience was good, but I saw non-caring and unhappy faculty, few opportunities (other than for premed students and those in engineering).

My daughter went to Alabama and had caring teachers, a lot of mentoring, and many opportunities. Although the college is mostly conservative, Greek-, and sports-oriented, my daughter is none of those things and still had many interesting friends. It's a huge school. She graduated about 10 years ago.
