Personal Consumer Issues • Life in 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 100s (the second innings)

Now 80. Never married, no children or siblings, always focused on my profession. Steady, moderate income with good benefits. 50s: the time of maximum professional success. 60s: stress from the combination of work and helping my mother through her final years. 70s: probably my most enjoyable decade, with little stress and lots of time for sports and travel as well as the professional research that continues even in retirement to provide my sense of purpose. But in my late 70s, my best friend and golf partner died. My other golf partner and my travel partner have both been sidelined with health problems, including worn-out joints. Since my 40s I’ve had a series of nuisance health problems, but so far there has been nothing major. With no family, though, I’m worried about the future: how to arrange for the handling of my affairs when my health does give out. No one will do for me what I did for my mother in her late 80s and 90s. And even with my help, she said she she’d have been happy to skip her final decade. For now, though, life is good.
