ore about your last sentence? Exactly what does that mean? Novice here.
Your Raspberry Pi just just another device in your home network. Raspberry is running a variant of linux, which you can assume to have reasonable security. Your security issue not come from the device, but from the application. In addition, if you try to setup a home email server on any OS, you may get an increase of attacks.

Rather than trying to secure Raspberry PI, secure you home network from the outside. Here's a checklist:
  1. {*]Make sure that your router is update to date on the firmware.
  2. Make sure you change the admin login, maker sure you change the default password.
  3. Disable remote router access so that you can only access the router locatly.
  4. For wireless, make sure you use WPA2 or better. Do not use WEP.
  5. Disable WPS.
  6. Make use of your guest network. On many routers, you can create a separate network. The guest network is useful if my kid's friend want to use the house wifi but I don't want them snooping on my network. If you are using your raspberry pi project as some sort of internet serving device, I would put it on the guest network so that it can't interact with your home network.
  7. Enable the firewall on your router and only allow access to services you use. For example, if you don't need to ssh to your home network from the outside, you should block SSH.
